Howard Rutherford, Howard Rutherford’s talent for creating collaborations & nurturing partnerships has elevated the Pier Aquarium to a new level. In the past year, Howard’s participation in the City of St Petersburg’s Ocean Team & St Pete Arts has cemented the Aquarium’s role as a significant partner in these two industry clusters. He has explored the world’s oceans and established himself as a leader in ocean science education reform, serving as past president of the Florida Marine Science Educators Association & board member of the National Marine Educators Association. Howard is also a participant in the 2009-2010 Community Foundation of Tampa Bay Nonprofit CEO Leadership Program. In his free-time, he enjoys playing piano & outdoor activities such as canoeing & hiking. Howard obtained his Bachelor of Science in Marine Science from Eckerd College and pursued his graduate work in Chemical Oceanography from USF. During his graduate career, he worked part-time as the Education Coordinator at The Pier Aquarium and developed many award-winning educational programs. He then took on a full-time Research Associate position with the USF College of Marine Science; returning to the Pier Aquarium as the President & CEO in 2000.
